Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare, and Warzone are too big to cohabitate a standard PS4 hard drive, Activision announced earlier today.

On Wednesday night, last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warsaw its season 2 update. This update is 10.5-26.5 GB of data depending on the platform. This is notable, as it officially pushed the file size for Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Black Ops Cold War to a new milestone: all three games can no longer fit on a single 500 GB PlayStation 4 hard drive.

The Call of Duty file size problem isn’t exactly new, but this takes the issue to a new level. And while you may ask yourself “why would someone want three different Call of Duty games on their console at once,” consider how many modes each game offers. The multiplayer ecosystem between both games is separate, Black Ops Cold War includes a Zombies mode and a campaign, and Warzone is its own mode entirely. Hardcore Call of Duty fans who’ve already dedicated their entire internal storage to the past two games in the series won’t even be able to do that anymore.

Thankfully, there are some solves for this issue, although none that allow players to hold onto all the data at once. Players can navigate the menus of each game and delete unwanted content, such as Zombies or the campaign. This should free up some space, but doesn’t help the player who’s still working through the campaign in their off time between Zombies, multiplayer, and Warzone sessions with their pals. However, unless that player is actively jumping between Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare multiplayer, one of them should be completely safe to delete — especially considering Modern Warfare is nearly two years old.

It’s unclear if Activision, Infinity Ward, Raven, and Treyarch will ever find a better solution to the storage wars. But at this rate, the constant growth of Call of Duty seems untenable, especially for players on older consoles with smaller drives.

Call of Duty: Warzone PS4 becomes first back compat game to support 120hz on PS5

Call of Duty: Warzone has become the first PlayStation 4 backwards compatible game to support 120hz on PlayStation 5.

Season 4 launched this morning, and buried within the patch notes is word Warzone now has 120hz support for PS5. This requires HDMI 2.1.

It's a surprise but welcome addition, and hopefully heralds similar updates from other PS4 games running in back compat form on PS5.

In November, Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward added 120fps support to Warzone on Xbox Series X.

Activision declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer at the time, leaving us to assume the reason for this difference had to do with the way Sony handles backwards compatibility. Back then, I speculated that Infinity Ward/Raven Software would have to create a full PS5 port of Warzone in order to enable 120fps on the console.

Then we received evidence to suggest that line of thinking was correct. Rocket League is in a similar boat to Warzone: the hugely popular football driving game was updated to run at 120fps on Xbox Series X, but not on PS5.

Developer Psyonix told Eurogamer there were a few reasons for the decision, and pointed out enabling 120fps on PS5 "requires a full native port", whereas it's just a "minor patch" on Xbox Series X and S.

Here's how to enable 120hz Call of Duty: Warzone on PS5:

  1. Go to PS5 system settings, then hit Screen and Video.
  2. Select Video Output.
  3. Set Enable 120Hz Output to automatic.
  4. Go back to main system settings and hit Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  5. Change Game Presets to Performance Mode.

Warzone download: How to get it on PS4, Xbox One, and PC

If you're still waiting to see how to get a Warzone download on PS5 or Xbox Series X there's no news yet. While Activsion is working on a next gen port of the game, currently you'll have to download the PS4 or Xbox One version of Warzone. You'll enjoy better performance but otherwise there's no big changes. Yet.

At least there's good news in that you still don't need PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold to get a Warzone download. It's completely free-to-play on both consoles and PC through, you just have to make sure you have enough storage because the download size for Call of Duty Warzone is a hefty one, despite new managment options to control and delete various components to saves space. If you're wondering how to get stuck in, read on for everything you need to know on how to download Warzone.

How to download Call of Duty Warzone

For anybody who already owns Modern Warfare, the first step is to make sure you have the full game downloaded. When you do, enter the main menu and Warzone will be an option, between multiplayer and Spec Ops.

If you don't own Modern Warfare, head to your respective store on consoles (PSN Store or Microsoft Store) and search for "Warzone". If you're on PC, make sure you have installed and it should pop up as an option on the left-hand side in the list of games. Unfortunately for you, the file size will be 83-101GB because it includes a lot of Modern Warfare assets. Of course, that's quite a chunky download so make sure you're starting it as soon as you can, because it could take up to several hours depending on your service provider and bandwidth.

That's all there is to it! Call of Duty Warzone is entirely crossplay, so you can jump in with your pals no matter what system they're playing on. You can also find out more information in the official Activision blog post about Warzone.

Warzone ps4

The latest Call of Duty game collection may now be too big to fit the base 500GB PlayStation 4 hard drive (via IGN). According to the official Call of Duty blog, if you want to have the latest Call of Duty: Warzone update and the full Black Ops: Cold War and Modern Warfare package on your PS4, you’ll have to uninstall content you don’t use.

The games make that somewhat easy to do by letting you remove certain modes — for example, if you only want to play Warzone, you could uninstall Black Ops’s single player, Zombie, and arcade modes, but it seems a bit ridiculous that you can’t fit three (or really, two and a half) games on an entire game console. That’s especially true since Activision sort of treats these three games as one thing: Warzone blends the content from Modern Warfare and Cold War, acting as a bridge between the two, with players being able to add and remove the parts they want.

To be fair, PS4 Pros and the newer PS4 Slim have all come with a 1TB hard drive since 2017, so they should be able to have the full experience. The PS5, however, may have a problem sometime soon: according to IGN, the PS4 has about 400GB of usable space, and the PS5 has 667.2GB — and, unlike the PS4, that SSD storage is not upgradable (yet). While you might be able to squeeze another non-Call of Duty game onto the PS5, you may find yourself deciding what to delete next time there’s an update.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War are now so big, Activision is telling base PS4 owners they may no longer be able to fit both full games on their console’s hard drive.

Call of Duty: Warzone’s season two update is live, and it’s another hulking 17GB on PS4 and PS5. As Eurogamer reports, downloading the update actually requires at least 100GB of clear space in order to finish installing it. And now Activision itself is warning players that they might not be able to have all of the latest Call of Duty content saved to their 500GB launch PS4s anymore as a result.

Here’s the company’s latest blog post:

Those who own a standard PlayStation 4 with a default hard drive of 500 GB may need to make room if they have the full versions of Modern Warfare®/Warzone and Black Ops Cold War with all modes and packs installed.

Should you have both games installed and have kept up to date with updates, you may need to delete some unused Game Content to have a successful download and install of the Warzone patch tonight.

Together, Modern Warfare and its free-to-play battle royal spin-off Warzone take up north of 170GB on PS4. Black Ops Cold War, meanwhile, is around 100GB. Throw in the approximately 100GB the PS4 keeps for its OS, and the extra space needed to download new updates, and its easy to see why base consoles need to become dedicated Call of Duty machines for the series’ biggest fans.

To get around this, Activision has broken up the latest Call of Duty games into a bunch of smaller packs depending on what content players actually care about. Even that solution though requires managing tons of add-ons and constantly deleting and re-downloading dozens of GBs of data. You might think that upgrading to a PS5 or Xbox Series X would fix this, but costs of the SSD technology in those next-gen consoles means they don’t have much more storage.

Making Warzone and Black Ops Cold War bigger and bigger is certainly one way to try to make sure its the only game people can play.

Call of Duty: Warzone survival tips and tricks

It's never too late to deploy to the Warzone - but if you want to avoid being canon-fodder for seasoned players, here are some tips and tricks to help you survive.

How do I get legendary items?

Keep searching for high quality items

Look out for less common items indicated with purple or orange highlights. These items will have more attachments that improve overall handling. Keep a special look out for orange supply boxes - these guarantee at least one legendary item.

What are loadouts in Call of Duty: Warzone?

Create your own loadouts

As you progress through the ranks, you'll start to unlock new weapons, attachments and perks to create your own custom loadouts with. Be careful when collecting a loadout once it drops though, as you may not be the only one in the area wanting to pick it up.

How can I avoid dying easily?

Pick your moments

It's easy to spot movement in the distance, so pick your route and timing carefully when moving between locations to avoid being spotted by rivals.

How can I cover ground quickly in Verdansk?

Travel to new areas of the map quickly

Use one of the various vehicles marked on the map to help you relocate. Be aware that when driving you'll appear on opponent player's maps, alerting them to your position. For the quickest way to get around though, be on the look out for Red Doors that allow teams in a hurry to fast travel.

How do I buy items during a match?

Use Buy Stations

Don't be tempted to hoard the cash you find and earn during a match - if you get sent to the Gulag you lose all but a couple of hundred dollars. Self-revive kits are well worth the cash, as are UAV's to give you a peek at nearby enemies.
