DURANT, Okla. (KXII) - The three Bryan county escapees from July are in custody. The Sheriff’s office says they managed to escape from a portion of the old jail. News 12 got an exclusive look at the jail today, and sat down with Sheriff Johnny Christian to learn how they got out.

Last month three Bryan County Jail inmates escaped and have since been caught. Sheriff Johnny Christian said the place they gained access has been updated.

“None of us were aware of this weakness part of the construction to where the escapees could gain access to this causeway to get access to the outside,” said Bryan County Sheriff Johnny Christian.

Early morning on July 19th Stoney Ellis, Billy Don Payne and Roger Lee Mayfield were discovered missing.

Payne and Mayfield were found locally. Ellis was found with his girlfriend in Louisiana. Desire Dawn Lee was arrested for assisting the escape of an inmate, a felony, and is now in the Bryan County jail on a $100,000 bond.

“You can work day in, day out you know and try to identify weak spots. Sometimes you just don’t see the weak spots that an inmate might find,” said Christian.

Christian said the three inmates removed a toilet fixture from a cell and found a way into a causeway, a narrow place along the wall where cables and pipes are run.

“Once they gained access to the causeway they then were able to make it to a door, was able to get the rubber around the window of the door and was able to escape and then over the fence,” said Christian.

He said this causeway was part of the old jail constructed in the 1980s and was not part of the renovation several years ago.

“Now we have it fixed where the bars are put on this particular door and the windows in this causeway area,” said Christian.

This is Christian’s first jail escape since elected Sheriff.

Billy Don Payne and Roger Lee Mayfield were found locally. Stoney Ellis was found with his...

There is no surveillance of their escape, something else Christian said has been improved.

“We have a really good system in place right now and made improvements, but we’re gonna even look into more improvements, better improvements,” said Christian.

They are continuing to make renovations to better improve security and safety.

Jail bryan county

DURANT, Okla. (KXII) - The search continues for one of three escaped Bryan county inmates after law enforcement captured Roger Lee Mayfield Tuesday.

Sheriff Johnny Christian said Roger Lee Mayfield, Stoney Ellis, and Billy Don Payne are the inmates who escaped just before 3 a.m. Monday morning.

Christian said Payne turned himself in later Monday morning.

Mayfield was taken into custody Tuesday, Christian said. They followed a lead to a house on West Elm Street where Mayfield was hiding alone.

“Durant Police Department investigators and the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office went to this location and knocked on the door and Mr. Mayfield answered the door, gave himself up. An arrest was made without incident,” said Christian.

Ellis remains at large as of 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Ellis was in custody for attempting to elude and a hold for charges in Texas. Payne and Mayfield were both in custody on drug possession charges.

Payne and Mayfield will face misdemeanor escape charges since they were in custody originally on misdemeanor drug charges. Ellis will face felony escape charges.

Bryan County residents are advised to keep doors closed and locked and call 911 if you see Ellis.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant closed Monday as a precaution.

Christian said the 3 men escaped through an older portion of the jail. They hopped the fence and took off north down an alley across from the jail.

He said this is the first escape since he’s been in office, and that it won’t become a regular problem.

“I can assure you this will not be a reoccurring a thing this is something that has happen and it’s not. When it comes to our jail we have strict policies in place and we got great leadership in place for this so it will not be a reoccurring thing,” said Christian.

Sue Stanfield is the director of Hands of Hope in Durant. She said her employees took precaution Monday morning, but weren’t afraid.

“It wasn’t any anxiety about it or anything. We trust the police in this area so if they were out we figured they were on the job doing what they need to be doing,” said Stanfield.

Stanfield hopes they won’t see as many escapes as they did before Bryan county renovated the jail.

“It used to be an ongoing thing but it hasn’t been since they had the renovations. So we’re hopeful that they’ve got it under control,” said Stanfield.

Bryan County Sheriff’s office said they’re working with multiple agencies to find the remaining fugitive.
