Find eBay seller by name or email address

  1. Sign in to your eBay account.

How to Contact Other eBay Members

Sooner or later every eBay member will find themselves wanting to contact another eBay member for one reason or another.

Perhaps a transaction went awry, leaving one or both parties unsatisfied, or there's another bad situation. Or, a buyer may want to ask a seller about a listing before buying. Buyers may also have questions about an item they purchased.

A seller may also want to ask a buyer about nonpayment. Or, a seller may wish to inform a buyer about a shipment status or other transaction details.

Every eBay member knows that eBay collects personal information, including a phone number, email address, and mailing address when someone joins the eBay community. It's only natural, therefore, to assume that you can use one or more of these methods to contact trading partners or potential trading partners.

While you can certainly contact other members, there are limits and caveats that you should know before deciding to make contact with someone. Before reaching out to other eBay members, here's what you need to know.

Trading Partners vs. Other eBay Members

eBay will provide a member's real contact information (i.e., phone number and email address) to you only if you have done business with them -- if you have bought from them or sold to them. This information is to be used exclusively for communication related to the transaction. Other uses of this information violate eBay rules.

eBay employs a mail-forwarding system for general inquiries. Members ask eBay to forward messages to other members' email boxes on their behalf. Replies to these messages are also routed through eBay, so there's no direct member-to-member contact. This way, members can communicate without eBay releasing private contact information.

Buying or Selling off eBay Is Not Allowed

Contacting another eBay member with a request to purchase or sell an item outside of eBay's auction structure is a violation of eBay rules. If you attempt to buy or sell this way, you will likely find your trading privileges reduced or restricted. Keep in mind that mail sent through the forwarding system is looked at by eBay before it's seen by the other party.

Inappropriate Contact Is Not Allowed

Though this comes as a surprise to many users, inappropriate contact is not limited to threatening or unwanted contact. Inappropriate contact includes nearly any contact unrelated to eBay auctions. eBay members expect to be contacted by other eBay members only if it has to do with a transaction or potential transaction. For General Contact

While there are links to many different pages on the eBay website related to contacting other users, there are only three basic methods for message-oriented contact among users (each intended for a different circumstance).

To contact an eBay member who is not a trading partner or potential trading partner, follow these steps carefully. This contact will be handled via the mail-forwarding system.

  1. Visit the eBay member search tool or click on Advanced Search near the top-right of almost any eBay page, followed by Find a Member in the Members heading of the sidebar. Enter the member's eBay user ID in the box labeled "Enter User ID or email address of member" on the Find a Member page. Click Search to search for the member.
  2. In the list of displayed search results, click on the eBay user ID of the member you want to contact. (If you don't see the desired member in the list of results, there is no eBay member on file with the entered user ID.) After clicking on the member's User ID, you'll see the member's feedback profile page. On the upper-right side of the page, click the Contact Member button to display the mail-forwarding system form.
  3. Type your message and click Send. You can uncheck the Hide my Email Address box if you want the other member to receive your real return address along with the message. You will receive a reply if, or when, the other member decides to write back.

For Pre-Sale Questions

To contact an eBay seller with questions about item descriptions, shipping arrangements, or other transaction-related details via the mail-forwarding system, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Ask Seller a Question link near the upper-right of the listing you want to ask about. On the modified mail forwarding system page, select the type of question you intend to ask from the Subject drop-down list.
  2. Enter the text of your question and click Send to send your message. Be sure to check the Hide my Email Address box if you wish to keep your email address private. Your message will be sent to the seller, and you'll receive your reply if or when they decide to write back.

For Post-Sale Questions or Disputes

Follow these steps to obtain the direct contact information of any member with whom you're currently transacting (i.e., the auction listing has closed, and you are either the buyer or seller). Note that when you request another member's contact information this way, they will automatically be supplied with your contact information as well.

  1. Click Advanced Search near the top-right side of almost any page on eBay's website.
  2. Click Find Contact Information in the Members heading of the sidebar. This can be found on the left side of the Advanced Search page.
  3. Enter the eBay user ID of the member in question in the first box of the Find Contact Information page.
  4. Enter the eBay item number for the related transaction in the second box of the Find Contact Information page. (To find an item number, either visit the buying section of your My eBay page or refer to the top of the item listing page for the auction in question.)
  5. Click the Search button to obtain the member's phone number and email address, which sends your phone number and email address at the same time.

Don't Forget to Check Your Email

Remember that nearly anytime you win an auction or successfully sell an item, eBay will automatically send your trading partner's email address to you, without you requesting it. In a similar vein, many members uncheck the Hide my Email Address box when they use eBay's mail-forwarding system. This allows both parties (if unchecked) to communicate directly, without having to use the eBay website at all.

eBay Find Contact Information feature deprecated

The eBay Find Contact Information feature from advanced search on eBay has been shut down. We’re not sure how long it’s been gone and although the form still exists, once the User ID and eBay Item number have been entered, the results page simply reads “This feature has been deprecated”. The feature still exists on eBay, but no longer works.

The eBay Find Contact Information feature was a useful feature for a number of reasons. For buyers, it was often the only way to get a seller’s phone number. For sellers, it was a great way to confirm a buyer’s partial address – often useful for fighting Item Not Received cases if a buyer updated their address after the parcel was shipped. Other sellers used it as a way to get a buyer’s phone number if their courier insisted upon it.

eBay have for a number of years clamped down on the ways that member can exchange contact information and the Find Contact Information feature is just one additional way that they have clamped down. For sellers, this means that the remaining tools become even more critical.

In 2017, we spotted that eBay added an option to offer a customer service number in the Manage Your Buyers’ Questions flow. More recently in the Autumn Seller Release, eBay announced that they were added the ability to offer a customer service phone number for pre-sales questions.

It is also possible to set the ‘Require phone number for delivery’ option in your eBay Selling Preferences. This will force buyers to add their phone number when they purchase your items ensuring that it’s available for you to pass to your couriers.

If You Send a Message to a Seller on eBay, How Do You Get One Back?

You can find just about anything for sale on eBay.

Whether you use eBay as a source of hard-to-find parts for critical business equipment or to locate bargains on new or used supplies, the service protects your personal information behind the anonymity of your eBay ID. Between the privacy concerns of an international marketplace and the need to assure that member-to-member contact remains productive, eBay limits how you interact with the sellers from whom you make purchases.

Contacting eBay Members

If you know the eBay ID of a member you want to contact, you can do so through her My World page. Its "Contact Member" link brings up a form on which you state the reason for your contact, including information about an item you bought from her, one she's selling that piques your interest or outside the context of any item for sale through the service. To find a member's My World page, click on the "Advanced" link on the eBay home page and use the "Find a Member" link in the Members section to load the "Find a Member" screen. Enter her ID or the email address she uses on eBay, fill in the verification code and click on the "Search" button to load a list of exact and close matches.

Asking Pre-Purchase Questions

Most items listed on eBay include an "Ask a Question" link on their item pages. When you click on one of these links, eBay loads a page that includes a selection of preset "auto answers" topic headings under which you can classify your question and an "Other" option for questions that fall outside the preset list. For example, the "Details About Item" radio button shows whether the item is used or new and the "Returns" radio button lists the seller's policies. The seller can post your question and her answer as part of the item description, so avoid revealing personal information in what you ask. In addition to the prospect of a public reply, you also receive the seller's response at the email address you use on eBay, forwarded through the eBay system to you without the seller seeing your email address. If the seller chooses to post your question and her answer on the item page, neither your eBay ID nor your email address appear unless you incorporate personal information in the body of your question message.

After You Buy

To communicate with a seller after you purchase one of her items, you can send a message through the "My eBay" section of the site. When you log in to your account and click on the "My eBay" link, you see a list of your recent purchases. The "More Actions" drop-down menu associated with each purchased item includes a "Contact Seller" option. Along with preset reasons for making contact, including payment, returns and shipping, you can choose "Other" to send a message for reasons beyond the automatic list of choices. A check box below the area in which you type your message tells eBay to send a copy of it to the email address you use on eBay. When you send your message through this online interface, eBay transmits it to the seller without revealing your email address. The seller replies through eBay -- either on the ebay website or by replying to the copy of your message that reaches her eBay email address -- and eBay relays the reply back to you. Neither you nor the seller see each other's email address during this process, unless one of you reveals it in the content of a message. Even if you choose not to receive a copy of your message, you receive the seller's response at your eBay email address. You also can view it and reply to it through "My eBay."

Requesting Contact Information

If you've conducted a transaction with a seller in the last 60 days, you can request her contact information from eBay, including her name, the city in which she lives and her phone number. When you make a contact-information request, the seller also receives the equivalent information about you. You can access the contact request form from the Advanced link on the eBay home page. The Members section of the Advanced page includes a "Find Contact Information" option. To receive member information through this process, you must supply the seller's ID and the eBay item number from a transaction no more than 60 days old.
