What’s the Difference Between UberX, XL, Select, Black, and SUV?

You may already know that you can use Uber to request an on-demand ride. But you may not know that there several Uber services to chose from, each with a different rider capacity, a different cost, and a different purpose.

The most common Uber services you will see in your city are: UberX, XL, Select, Pool, and Black. This article explains what each service is, how much they cost, and how to choose the right service for the right situation.

This post is also available as a Web Story: “Which Uber Ride Type is Right for You?”

The Differences Between Uber X, XL, Pool, Comfort, Green, Select, and Black

  • UberX seats 4 passengers*. UberX cars are typically sedans such as Toyota Prius, Honda Accord
  • UberXL seats 6* passengers in an SUV and minivan. XL costs more than UberX
  • Uber Pool and Express Pool (Temporarily unavailable due to Covid-19) are a shared ride with another Uber user heading in a similar direction as you
  • Uber Comfort seats 4 in a larger vehicle with more legroom
  • Uber Green is a ride in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. Includes a $1 fee
  • Uber Select is Uber’s entry-level luxury service that seats up to 4 passengers. Select cars are typically BMW, Mercededs, Audi, etc
  • Uber Black and Uber SUV is Uber’s luxury service. Commercially registered and insured livery vehicles, typically a black SUV or luxury sedan. Black is the most expensive Uber service

*Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating capacities have lowered to 3 passengers for sedans and 5 passengers for SUVs

Promo code ‘cws7s2‘ works for all Uber services in the USA!

Covid-19: New Policies to Protect Passengers and Drivers

Uber has reacted to the Covid-19 pandemic by instating a number of new policies intended to protect the health of both passengers and drivers.

  • Drivers and passengers in all states are now required to wear a mask
  • The Uber Pool service is temporarily unavailable
  • Passengers are no longer permitted to sit in the front seat
  • 3 passenger maximum for sedans, 5 for SUVs
  • Drivers are encouraged to regularly sanitize their vehicles and drive with their windows cracked open
  • Passengers and drivers must agree to a safety checklist before each ride

How to Select Between Uber Ride Types

To select the Uber service you want to use,  first enter your destination. After you enter a destination, a list of ride options will appear on the bottom of the screen. Scroll through the ride types to see the services available in your area. Change your ride type by tapping the name of a service.

After you tap a different ride type, the button at the bottom of the screen will change to “Confirm *name of service*” So if your button says “Confirm UberXL,” you can be sure that you’re getting an XL.

Not all services listed on this page are available in every city. Some cities only offer UberX, while larger cities like Los Angeles offer 10+ different services.

How Much Does Uber Cost?

Whether you decide to use Uberx, XL, Select, Black, SUV, or Lux, you can find out how much your ride will cost before you request it. Uber will automatically show you how much the cost of your ride will be when you enter your pickup location and destination.

The cost of an Uber ride is determined by the ride type, the distance, the time, market demand, and other fees such as tolls or airport surcharges. The cost does not depend on the number of passengers. If you have more than one passenger, the cost does not increase. If you do ride with more than one passenger, you can choose to equally split the cost of the ride with them. There is a 25 cent fee for each rider who splits the ride.

More Information About Uber Ride Types

Find more detailed descriptions of each Uber service in the section below.

UberX Seats 4 Passengers

UberX is the standard Uber service that seats up to 4 passengers. Of all the Uber ride types, only UberPOOL is cheaper. In most cities, UberX cars must be model year 2006 or newer and pass a vehicle inspection that looks at basic safety features like brakes, tires, and overall condition. UberX cars are typically economic sedans like Honda Accord, Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Escort, etc. UberX drivers drive “regular” cars that typically aren’t luxury sedans or SUVs.

UberX drivers are not professional livery drivers and a commercial license is not required, although some UberX drivers might have one. UberX drivers must be 21 or older and are required to pass a driving record check and a background check.

You can check Uber.com or inside the app to see the fare prices in your area. UberX is much cheaper than cab fare, and typically is cheaper than Lyft, Uber’s largest competitor.

UberXL Seats 6 Passengers in an SUV or Minivan

UberXL seats larger groups of 6 passengers in an SUV or minivan. The cost of UberXL is higher than UberX, but when it ends up being very low cost if you split the cost with your group. it  UberXL vehicles are minivans and SUV’s like Honda Pilot, Dodge Caravan, GMC Acadia, etc. Uber XL is the right option for a large group of people who want the most affordable ride for 5 or more passengers.

Uber Pool and Express Pool: Share Your Ride With a Stranger and Split the Cost

Covid-19 note: Due to Covid-19, Uber Pool is temporarily unavailable.

Uber Pool is the cheapest Uber service. Pool pairs you with another Uber user who is headed in a similar direction as you. It typically costs less than UberX. Your driver may pick you up first, or they may pick up your companion first. The same goes for drop-offs: The Uber app will tell your Pool driver to drop off passengers according to the most efficient route. A great, cheap option as long as you don’t mind sharing your ride with a stranger.

Express Pool is similar to Uber Pool, but instead of getting picked up directly at your location, you have to walk to a nearby pickup location. At the end of the ride, you are dropped off at a drop-off location close to your final destination. Express Pool is cheaper than regular Pool.

Uber Comfort Seats 4 Passengers in a Larger Vehicle With More Legroom

Uber Comfort vehicles have more headroom and legroom than the standard UberX vehicle. Comfort is a good choice when you need more room for yourself and your luggage, but you don’t need a full XL minivan or SUV. Full-size sedans and SUVs qualify for Uber Comfort, and some markets also require Comfort vehicles to be newer models.

Uber Green: A Ride in a Low-Emissions Vehicle

Uber Green is a ride type that guarantees that your trip will be in a low-emissions hybrid or electric vehicle. There is a $1 surcharge for Green rides. Half of the fee goes to drivers, and half goes to the Green Futures program, which will help drivers transition to lower-emissions vehicles in the future. Think of Uber Green as UberX, but with a guaranteed hybrid or electric car.

Uber Select is a Luxury Ride for 4 Passengers

Select is a higher-end service that seats 4 passengers in a luxury sedan. Select drivers only drive newer luxury cars like Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Audi. Uber Select costs more than UberX and XL. It’s a good option when you want a nicer car, but you don’t want to pay for the top-end Uber Black service. Select is not available in all markets, so check your Uber passenger app to see if you can request a Select in your area.

Uber Black and SUV are Luxury Vehicles With Professional Drivers

Uber Black is a high-end, professional livery service that only accepts late-model luxury SUVs and drivers with commercial registration. In some markets, there are two levels within the Black Car service: Uber Black is a luxury sedan that seats four, and if available, Uber SUV is a luxury SUV that seats 5 or more.

The vehicle standards and driver standards are much higher for Uber Black: Your Black Car driver will have commercial registration, commercial insurance, and their vehicle will be late-model, high-end luxury sedan or SUV that has a leather interior.

Related:Uber Black Driver Requirements

Uber Black and SUV are the most expensive Uber services. It caters to Uber users who are willing to spend a little extra for a more professional experience.

Other Uber Services: Assist, WAV, Taxi, Español, and More

There are many other Uber services that are only available in a few markets: UberTaxi, For Hire, T, Cab, Español, Wav, Assist, Rush, and Lux. I cover all the other less-common Uber services in this article:

Uber Reserve: Book a Ride in Advance

Uber’s typical scheduling feature, described in the section below, isn’t much more than an automated ride request to the nearest driver. Uber Reserve changes that with a fully fleshed out scheduling feature that allows you to book a ride with a driver up to 30 days in advance.

You will be matched with a driver up front, so you can be reassured that a driver has your ride booked in their schedule. If you have selected a favorite driver in the app, they will receive your ride request before other drivers. Another benefit is that you’ll get 15 minutes of waiting time, as opposed to only 5 minutes for non-scheduled rides.

How to Schedule an Uber – Uber Reserve

Uber allows you to schedule a ride in advance. On the home screen, tap the “Schedule” button next to the “Where To?” search bar to schedule a ride. Next, you pick the date, time, and pickup & drop off location.

Some cities offer reservations, known as Uber Reserve. With reservations, drivers can accept your ride in advance and enter it into their itinerary. The process to set up a reservation is the same as scheduling a ride.

In markets that don’t offer Uber Reserve, scheduling a ride only sends out an automated request to nearby drivers around 20 minutes before your scheduled time.

Tap the clock icon to schedule an Uber

How to Add Multiple Stops to Your Uber Trip

You may want to make more than one stop during your Uber trip to pick up or drop off another person. To add another stop to your trip, enter your destination into the “Where to?” search bar, and on the following screen, click the plus sign (+) next to the destination you entered, then enter your second stop. For more instructions on adding multiple stops to your Uber trip, read this post:

What Type of Uber is Best for Trips to the Airport?

It’s not always obvious what type of Uber you should get when you go to the airport because you may be traveling with a group of people and bulky luggage. Generally speaking, an UberX should be ok if you have 2 people and a regular amount of luggage. If you have more than 2 people or lots of luggage, and UberXL is the better option. I wrote a detailed guide on using Uber to get to the airport here:

Get a Discount on Uber: Promo Code ‘cws7s2′ Works For All New Users (USA only)

New Uber users can use a promo code to get a discount on your first ride. My promo code ‘cws7s2′ (USA only) works for all new users. There are other methods you can use to get ride discounts. You can invite other users to the app with a referral link or promo code, or you can take advantage of limited local promotions that Uber runs in your city that will be announced inside the app or via email.

What is Uber?

Uber is an on-demand car service that allows users to request a ride through their Android or iPhone app. Once a driver is signaled through the app, it usually takes less than 10 minutes for a car to arrive at your door. During this brief wait period, Uber allows you to track the cars location so you know exactly when to expect its arrival. The app provides a cashless payment process by charging all Uber rides to an on file credit card attached to your account. One thing to note though, sometimes Uber enacts surge pricing during peak travel times, meaning your fare could double, triple, or even cost you up to 7X the normal amount! On the plus side, when surge pricing is in effect you will be notified within the app before you request a ride. Uber is currently available in 67 countries!
