Dataminers Discover Upright Orc Models Inside World of Warcraft

Posted on by Gavin Sheehan

|

So apparently there's more hidden in the Battle for Azeroth expansion for World of Warcraft than you may think as dataminers have discovered some specific models that may have you looking at orcs in a very different way. Check out the video below where a YouTube channel for WoWhead has discovered a bunch of animations in the expansion for male orcs standing upright, which has rightfully been assumed is customizations for the characters. This includes poses like laughing and making chicken wing poses to call out people, which look alright but kind of funky just sitting on an open plain of existence with nothing to back it up.

Now that this has been revealed, we set our watches to see how long it takes Blizzard to confirm the news and let players know this content is on the way. The video has been up since March 6th and a few different outlets have picked up on it this weekend that will surely catch the eyes of the devs. Considering what you see is pretty much cosmetic and not really a game-breaking discovery, we lay odds you'll see it sooner than later as the company will probably now go to greater lengths to protect any content from coming out earlier than expected.

Final Fantasy 14 Director on WoW Players Switching Over

By Starym

There has been a lot of talk about players swapping over from WoW to other games recently, a lot of it fairly unpleasant, as some players accuse others of "abandoning" the game while others criticize those that still play. Many of the players either leaving or taking a break have been playing Final Fantasy 14, (including some high-profile streamers) and we now have some comments from the game's director, Naoki Yoshida, regarding this tribalism and players being antagonistic towards swapping games.
In an excerpt from an interview with PCGamer, Yoshida talks about the perception of players leaving WoW being a major factor in Final Fantasy 14's recent major growth, saying that nobody is making people quit one game in order to play the other.
[And they're not saying that] because you started Final Fantasy 14, you can never go back to WoW, you know? I'm afraid I'm not really fond of that trend of people saying, 'Oh this person has moved over to such and such game.
...
But I also worry about some of these people getting a little too enthusiastic to the point where they are sort of binding people down, chaining people down and going into the community and almost attacking those people who want to take a break sometimes and maybe enjoy a different game and chain them down in that way.

- Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy 14 Director He also talked about how leaving and coming back to a game is actually a good thing, as it makes players appreciate the things is does differently more, saying "That's wonderful. I think it is important that we come in contact with new games. It's a new kind of stimulation, so it keeps us fresh." You can read more on this story over at PCGamer.

This isn't the first time Yoshida has spoken of WoW recently, as he praised the game as having inspired the "A Realm Reborn" revamp of FF14 and how he is generally fond of it, which you can read about here.

Upright Orc back with Garrosh edit

I used Garrosh from the 5.4 patch cut scene and also the new player model head just to give a rough idea of the look you'd get here, more noble and powerful as a warrior of the Orcs. Also I gave Garrosh some hair and the glowing eyes of a chaos orc, like his father. I tweaked the skin color and gave some highlights with bold white accents here and there to give it a painterly look, not sure how rough it looks, the resolution of the player model orc head is a bit too clear compared to the pixelated body, I could have matched the blur more.

I have been wishing for an option to use the orc posture you see int he Warcraft concept art since 2004. Yes, the silhouette needed to be recognizable instantly from a human, but I think Blizzard has more than acknowledged they went too far, every chance since Cataclysm they've changed the posture to give them upright spines with overly built trapezius muscles, as is traditional in orc art. The ingame Vanilla model looks like an arthritic old hermit you'd expect to find hiding as a shaman somewhere, or a twisted old warlock wracked with evil and age.

Thankfully the art director of WOW, Chris Robinson, has said they're seriously considering this change as an option in the player model updates we're getting in Warlords of Draenor as of November 22nd.

Horde Upright orc preview (not the Saurfang model)

I haven't really seen a thread showing this yet, so here goes: I was playing around with the WoWModelViewer, using the BfA alpha files. Of course I had to check the orc models. There wasn't a new one showing up, BUT as I was looking through the animations, I managed to find some really interesting ones. They are labeled FuturePatchXX, some of which are just some new/old class spell animations or the NPC animations seen in the BfA trailer (NPCs carrying a barrel or whatnot). But a few of them were actually the brand new upright orc animations! There wasn't a standing animation, but I found some interesting upright casting animations, walking and running animations and a few really hard to categorize animations (weird casting animations for classes that orcs cannot be, which weirdly had upright poses also). I took some pics I'm gonna try to post here:

So all three of these are the same animation (applied to my main), unassumingly the walking animation; there was no point posting the running animation as well because it didn't look too different from the walking one when frozen. I slapped a tabard on that last one, just to show off the uprightness a little bit. MOST tabards looked okay, some looked a little disfigured (an example: the earthen ring tabard).

I do apologize if this is old news. I have not seen this posted here (could have missed it perhaps), so I wasn't sure. I was just too excited not to share this here.

If I was playing an Orc lock I'd still play him hunched over since it reminds me of Gul'dan and seems thematically appropriate.

Made a few side-by-sides, mostly for myself but I might as well share them here.

So this one right here is the first frame of the walking animation, both upright and hunched. I am not 100% sure if the first frames of the two animations are "the same", but this is the best I could do.

This right here is the same animation (and frame) as in the image above, but from a different angle. Again, not sure if the animations have the same first frame.

Okay, this one doesn't match exactly, I tried the frame 420 (heh) on both the running animations, but it was completely different, so I had to match them manualy. It's the best I could do.

I know these comparisons aren't the best, but I tried.

Also I can't really test armor in the WoW Model Viewer because it bugs out in all sorts of wonderful ways, but if you want to try some armors on the upright stance, go to wowhead dressing room, and use the WAWalk animation, it's pretty much the same thing I used in the WoW Model Viewer.

Honestly prefer the hunched one. The no neck thing is so awkward that while it looks "mildly" okay from head on, it looks like a horrid rendition of a bulldog from the side. And overall a little less orky imo.

Upright orc model is here(World of Warcraft)

    Please fix Orc Shoulders

Agreed! The Upright Orc Male Shoulder positioning causes the shoulders to float very high and makes it difficult to fully enjoy the Upright Orc model.

During the 8.3 PTR, some changes were made to the shoulders that brought them lower, however it caused a number of other issues (such as with the weapon sheathing and clipping with the shoulder piece on the left side) that led to them reverting the changes. The only change to the Upright Orc shoulder positioning that made it into 8.3 (Live) was that they turned the shoulders out slightly (even though the floating was the primary issue).

As someone who has monitored this issue since the implementation of the Upright Orc model in 8.0, I believe (from my perspective as a player) that there are two parts to fixing the shoulder issues:

    1. Bring the shoulders slightly lower and inwards.
    2. Pull the Left-hand shoulder piece positioning slightly forward so that the front side of a number of shoulder piece models don’t clip into the front side of the Orc’s shoulder (e.g. Tusks of Mannoroth, Pauldrons of the Molten Giant, Honorbound Centurion’s Pauldrons (base version)).

As a reference (for an example of Upright Orc shoulder positioning that seems to fit much better): WoWHead’s Dressing Room model viewer seems to have different shoulder piece positioning for Upright Orcs than in-game (the shoulder pieces on WoWHead’s model viewer lay more directly on the shoulders than they do in-game). Why this is the case has to do with WoWHead’s model viewer, but it works as a great example of optimal shoulder piece positioning for the Upright Orcs.

Edit: just realized this was in the Transmog section, we should post about this in the Feedback forums.

The upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Battle for Azeroth will be featuring a new Orc model which will be standing upright.

To tie World of Warcraft players over until the new expansion arrives, gamers can participate in Trails of Style the fashion contest mode. More importantly though, WoWhead has datamined the new Orc models which can be found above.

The video shows the new Orcs that are going to be featured in the upcoming expansion, it appears from the video that the Orcs are standing much more upright compared to their previous models. Images of the models can be found below.
