It's the official opening day for Earls Kitchen + Bar, the latest in a string of openings at the developing Assembly Row. Earls, a Canadian family-owned chain, doesn't have too many other locations in the United States yet — just Denver, Miami, and Seattle.

The menu features comfort food inspired by a lot of different cuisines, from crispy Thai shrimp to an Indian curry, but the real stand-out is the cocktail program, created by beverage director Cameron Bogue, an alum of the Boulud empire. Bogue's a fan of cute presentations; there's a drink called the Mad Hatter, for instance, that's served (for four people) in colorful teapots. Bees Knees is served in a glass bear-shaped jar, and Cabin Fever has an edible pinecone. The Somerville Earls is open for lunch and dinner every day (with brunch on weekends).

(Of note, this is subject to change as I’ve only tasted their sushi).

Upon entry, Earl’s impresses. My friend and I got a seat by the floor to ceiling windows and we were seated between rows of plants backing the booths. It is spacious and well lit, this will presumably be a mainstay at Assembly.

I looked at the menu online and would like to shout out to whoever designed the website; filtering by vegan options is a major blessing. Doing so returned 8 items ranging from bibimbap to burgers.

We both ordered the green dragon roll. The roll was artfully presented, but was ultimately not worth the $14 price point. It is advertised as being served with sriracha, which mine was not. The addition of breadcrumbs to mimic roe was interesting, albeit unnecessary. Overall, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay under $10 for this, but at just $1.75 more, I could have gotten an impossible burger with fries.
Also, the gin and tonic was all tonic.

I am hesitant to write Earl’s off completely, as it is one of the very few vegan places near my Medford office. However, if you are in the mood for sushi and can afford the travel time, Koto in Salem or Typhoon in Back Bay have far better sushi options.
