Best Exhaust for Your G35: Coupe or Sedan

You might be asking yourself, “Why should I replace my G35’s exhaust system?”

Well, quality exhausts for Infiniti G35 coupes and sedans will increase horsepower, torque, and overall performance from your car. They also make your car sound better.

Sometimes because of better flow of exhaust gases, an aftermarket exhaust can even increase MPG. Of course, this assumes you don’t spend more time with your foot on the gas pedal after you get addicted to hearing your better sounding exhaust.

Exhaust system modifications are one of the most popular G35 mods. This is no surprise as the Infiniti G35 (also sold under the Nissan brand in some countries) is such a popular car with enthusiasts like yourself.

This easy-to-read guide will walk through the best exhausts for your G35, with a break down of exhausts into 3 different price categories.

Construction of Replacement Exhaust Systems

All of the exhaust systems below are constructed with stainless steel. They are dual type, typically cat-back systems.

Most of the G35 exhaust systems in this article come with a warranty, and most can be installed at home with some patience and the willingness to learn.

Exhaust diameters range widely, from 2-inch to 3-inch pipes, and the tips range from 4 inches to 4.5 inches in size.

Types of Infiniti G35 Exhaust Systems

Getting the best exhaust for your Infiniti G35 coupe or sedan will depend on your unique needs, since there are many different types of exhausts.

All of the exhaust systems below are dual-exit exhausts, but they vary in pipe diameter, tip size, and what materials the tip is built from. Some of them have better warranties than others, too.

Finally, there are many different costs associated with aftermarket exhaust systems. Some are inexpensive and built for everyday use, while the high-performance units will run you a bit more out of pocket.

Cheap G35 Exhaust Systems for Coupe or Sedan Owners

All of the companies in this category make exhaust kits that are reasonably priced.

The word “cheap” is often seen to be negative, but these exhausts still meet the minimum requirements. Maybe they could have a nicer finish or a slightly nicer sound, but they aren’t bad exhausts by any means.

They’re ordered from least expensive to most expensive, based on the price at the time of publication.

Auto Dynasty offers an inexpensive cat-back exhaust system for your Infiniti coupe. Its muffler tip type is a dual path, rounded tip, with a 4.5-inch diameter and a 2.25-inch inlet/outlet size.

This is not the best exhaust for the Infiniti G35 sedan because it’s not a direct bolt on. This is a coupe-only exhaust system.

The materials used with the TIG-welded CNC machine flanges help resist pressure and corrosion. The system offers an aggressive, deep and smooth tone while ensuring smooth exhaust gas flow.

The system has been proven to offer a slight performance increase while improving fuel efficiency.

DNA Motoring Exhaust systems are some of the cheapest if not the best exhaust for Nissan V35 coupe owners on a budget. They’re built from T-304 stainless steel and feature smooth mandrel bends for great exhaust flow and performance.

Each exhaust is designed to be low restriction, low backpressure, with as few bends as possible.

They include all the necessary gaskets and hardware for installation which can save you in the long fun. Their flanges are TIG welded for strength and CNC machined to resist corrosion and exhaust heat. Their systems have a deep, aggressive sound.

The only complaint we have about these systems is that their fitment can sometimes be off, so you may need to man handle the system to get it to fit your factory exhaust mounts.

Manzo M2 Cat-Back Exhaust System

Manzo’s M2 system has been claimed to improve horsepower, torque, and overall performance due to its straight-through design. Do know though, that it is a loud unit. We love this, but your neighbors might not.

As an added bonus, Manzo’s M2 exhaust system includes an upgraded Y-pipe for the front section of your exhaust.

Spec-D Tuning Exhaust

Spec-D Tuning cheap G35 coupe exhaust system

Manufacturer: Spec-D Tuning
Product Type: Cat-Back
G35 Type: Coupe
Construction Type: T-304 Stainless Steel
Pipe Diameter (in.): 2.25
Tip Size (in.): 4.0
Tip Description: Single Round Rolled Angle-Cut Phantom
Warranty: 90 Days

Spec-D Tuning exhaust systems are direct bolt-on aftermarket replacements for your Infiniti G35 coupe.

That said, while it has been designed to fit your OEM parts and mounts, like most of the cheap G35 exhausts, fitment can be an issue. It doesn’t mean it will never fit, you might just need to spend some time making it work.

Like others, they’re made from stainless steel, with CNC machined flanges for a long life. Mandrel-bent piping gives your car smooth exhaust flow and the least amount of restriction possible.

This system comes with 4-inch tips rather than the 4.5-inch tips. They are single rounded, rolled angle-cut phantom tips. This doesn’t seem to affect performance though.

The exhaust system comes with a “Manufacturer’s Warranty” of 90 days, which is the same warranty offered on all Spec-D Tuning products.

AJP Distributors Cat-Back

AJP Distributors Infiniti G35 Sedan Exhaust System

Manufacturer: AJP Distributors
Product Type: Cat-Back
G35 Type: Sedan
Construction Type: Polished Stainless Steel
Pipe Diameter (in.): 2.0
Tip Size (in.): 4.0
Tip Description: Dual Twin Muffler Tip
Warranty: 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

AJP offers this smaller cat-back exhaust system for your Infiniti G35, fitting the 2007-08 model best.

The piping diameter on this exhaust system is only 2 inches, and the muffler tip size is only 4 inches. AJP can get away with this smaller diameter system as the system splits very close to the catalytic converter.

It’s built from polished stainless steel and has a sleek, clean look.

AJP’s offering isn’t anywhere near as loud as the others mentioned here, but for some owners that’s what they are looking for. This just helps your car to growl a bit more than the OEM system.

Consider this unit to be like a OEM that makes some noise up only when you put your foot down.

Best Mid-Range Exhausts for Your G35 Coupe or Sedan

The products listed below are a bit pricier than the ones above, but they typically have better warranties.

The most notable difference in these units is the fitment. Where most of the cheap exhausts need a lot of manipulation to get them fitted, in this price bracket you can expect them to fit your car with a lot less effort.

They’re in increasing order by cost.

Megan Racing OE-RS

Megan Racing Infiniti G35 Exhaust

Manufacturer: Megan Racing

G35 Type: Coupe

The Megan Racing OE-RS cat-back exhaust systems are based on factory styling, but with bigger piping and OEM style polished mufflers. They offer a quiet sound and are still quite affordable given their quality.

Do note that you will need to buy your G35’s Y-pipe separately from this system. The exhaust system is a direct bolt-on application and, unlike some of the cheaper systems, fitment is usually like a glove (perfect).

All Megan Racing piping is mandrel bent with a high polished finish. This system will help improve horsepower with a minimal noise increase. Like the AJP Distributors cat-back, these are similar to an OEM+ unit.

Tanabe Medalion Touring Performance

Despite being listed in this section, Tanabe are still cheap G35 exhausts, at around half the price of a Borla system.

Their exhausts use new “continuous strand” ADVANTEX packing material technology. This helps them achieve very high levels of exhaust efficiency. Despite this, it’s still really street-driveable, with an extremely low frequency and deep tone that stays well under 93db.

If all out noise isn’t for you, definitely check out these systems from Tanabe, they’re mandrel bent, improve exhaust flow, and have minimal bends.

Tanabe exhaust systems help reduce two key elements: weight and backpressure. Their thin wall piping, hollow hangers and pressed flanges help reduce weight.

Each system comes with a 1-year warranty.

Magnaflow Cat-Back

Manufacturer: Magnaflow
Product Type: Cat-Back
G35 Type: Coupe
Construction Type: 409 Stainless Steel
Pipe Diameter (in.): 2.5

Magnaflow exhaust systems unleash horsepower and torque gains. Each system is custom-engineered for your specific year G35.

You can choose between single and dual-exit systems, though we’ll focus on dual here.

The Magnaflow system uses dense acoustical-absorbing material inside the muffler to filter out vibration and harsh noise, which leaves behind a smooth, throaty growl.

Their systems incorporate mandrel bent tubing for restriction-free transitions, unlike those in stock exhausts. Their exhausts help with sound, performance, and power—everything you want your exhaust to fix with aftermarket parts. Unlike many of the other systems mentioned in this article, Magnaflow exhausts are street legal in all 50 states.

A Magnaflow exhaust will help increase horsepower, increase pulling torque, and even improve MPGs. While they aren’t a cheap G35 exhaust, they do offer a lot for the money spent.

High-Performance Infiniti G35 Exhausts

Finally, we have the upper-tier, high-performance exhausts for your Nissan V35 coupe or sedan.

These exhaust systems are made from the highest quality materials and have the best finishes. Time has been taken to make sure they not only sound good, but they look great too.

They’re ordered from least to most expensive.

Invidia Gemini

G35 Type: Sedan
Construction Type: SUS304 Stainless Steel
Pipe Diameter (In.): 2.36
Tip Size (In.): 4.33
Tip Description: Rolled Titanium Tip
Warranty: Limited Lifetime
Check Prices:Enjuku Racing

Invidia’s titanium rolled cat-back exhaust system is considered one of the best exhausts for G35 sedans. Their flat bottom-shaped muffler design helps improve high-speed aerodynamic performance.

The muffler contains continuous piping and ADVANTEX material to give excellent free-flow and optimized backpressure.

The Invidia exhaust will free up horsepower, and give torque gains. The exhaust is mandrel bent to shape, with CNC machined flanges.

It gives off a rich, deep, sporty sound. Do know that this system does not have a resonated X-pipe, so it will be a bit louder and raspier than other exhaust systems. Most owners find that the rasp goes away over time, though.

Borla G35 S-Type Exhaust

Borla G35 S-Type Exhaust System

Manufacturer: Borla
Product Type: Cat-Back
G35 Type: Coupe
Construction Type: T-304 Stainless Steel

Check Prices: Amazon

Borla has four signature exhausts, including the Touring Series, S-Type Series, ATAK Series, and Multicore Series. Here we focus on their S-Type.

Their exhausts are crafted entirely from aerospace-grade T-304 stainless steel, for corrosion-resistance. Their mandrel bent tubing helps eliminate kinks, blockages, and excessive backpressure, to keep the pipes free flowing.

What helps make them one of our favorite exhausts for Infiniti G35 coupes is their Million-Mile Warranty. They aren’t cheap G35 exhausts by any means, but they’ll bolster horsepower and torque and improve fuel economy.

Like Magnaflow exhausts, Borla’s aftermarket exhaust kits are street legal in all 50 states.

Each kit incorporates Borla’s patented multi-core and straight-through muffler designs. The systems come with all the required clamps, connectors, and hardware needed for installation. These are by far our favorite when it comes to making a G35 sound great.

Stillen 504360D Cat-Back

Warranty: Limited Lifetime

On specs alone, Stillen brings one of the strongest exhaust units to this shootout. This cat-back system brings an increase of 15hp to the wheels, and increases 18 ft/lbs torque on the dyno.

The tips are made from Polished 304 Stainless Steel, and are dual wall. The sound is mild while idling, but aggressive when you’re on the throttle.

A visually aggressive unit, the look matches the roaring exhaust note.

Stillen guarantees easy installation, and their system comes with all the hardware necessary. This is an easy unit to fit.

Their cat-back exhaust system fits RWD and AWD models, and is 13lbs less than your stock exhaust.

HKS Hi-Power

Manufacturer:HKS
Product Type: Full Exhaust
G35 Type: Coupe
Construction Type: SUS304 Stainless Steel
Pipe Diameter (In.): 2.36
Tip Size (In.): 4.68
Tip Description: Hi-Power Titanium Tip
Warranty: 1 Year

HKS is iconic, having participated in racing tournaments all around the world. This has helped them to accumulate wide knowledge on crafting the best auto parts.

This knowledge comes at a price though; they are very expensive exhausts.

The Hi-Power exhaust system is a serious unit made from SUS304 stainless steel with high-powered titanium tips, a combination that improves durability and appearance. It’s also “JASMA” approved, meaning the absolute loudest it’ll ever get is 98db.

If you want a cheap G35 exhaust, look elsewhere. With HKS you’re getting one of the best exhaust systems available, but this comes at a price.

Their dual muffler system is a full independent layout of both right and left banks of V type engines. The full dual layout, without a 2-1 junction portion, prevents performance drop due to exhaust interference. At high RPM, this makes a real difference.

The HKS Hi-Power exhaust system has one of the best sounds, with a loud growl. Again though, this comes at a price that not all G35 owners are willing to pay.

The Best Exhausts for G35 Coupes and Sedans

  1. I recently purchased a 2004 Infiniti G35X . It has dual pipes going into one (1) muffler. It is real loud. How can I get it quieter without re-doing the entire system. Sounds like a rally car and real fast.

    1. Hi Gordon,

If you want the simplest solution you could look at having a shop install another muffler after your existing muffler. Or failing that, 2 smaller mufflers up above your dual pipes. They’ll be able to give you a better idea of what is best as it really depends on your current setup.

      Thanks

  2. I always admired Dual exhaust. The grey G35 at the top of this page is beautiful. I really want to know the setup to install it on mine. Does it branch off from one pipe into two, or is it a true dual exhaust straight from the manifold? And what did they do with the evap system?

  3. What’s the trunk called on the g35 up on top of the page I want one for mine did it come with the spoiler to

    1. Hey Edgar, that type of trunk is called a “duckbill”. As to who makes it, you’re testing my memory! I think it could be one made by HD trunks. Outcast Garage may make what you’re looking for but the “bill” or “lip” on their trunk is usually larger. It just depends what style you like more.

  4. what gain on G35 Magnaflow?

There’s no question that the Infiniti G35 is continuously increasing in popularity in the tuning scene, with prices more tempting than ever before and owners are keen to get the best performance gains and sound out of their G-Series.

Why should I upgrade my G35 exhaust?

An exhaust is undoubtedly one of the first modifications that every owner should make to allow your VQ35DE (or HR) engine breathe as freely as possible whilst also offering an improved sound which we think it should’ve left the factory with.

Given their age and potential mileage, you may need to swap out your existing system if it develops a fault.

Others will opt for an aftermarket exhaust to improve the aesthetics of the G35’s booty and appreciate the performance gains that come with a free-flowing exhaust upgrade.

In stock form, OEM exhausts are naturally restrictive, thanks to the tight emissions legislation that they’re required to conform to.

Not only that, but if you intend to buy a brand new OEM exhaust from Infiniti/Nissan, you’ll likely leave the dealership with your eyes watering when they tell you the price.

Also, let’s not forget that the G35 was designed to be a luxury cruiser, and for the upper-class gentleman they’re appealing to, lairy aftermarket exhausts are probably the last thing on their mind.

infiniti base bc racing coilovers weds kranze cerberus ii chrome g35 exhaust

However, we’re going to take a quick guess that your interests lie elsewhere, which is why an exhaust upgrade is appealing.

When it comes to maximizing the potential of the G35’s 3.5 L V6 powerplant, an aftermarket exhaust will be essential.

Not only will you benefit from the improved looks, but it’ll also enable the V6 engine to roar to life.

Alongside these benefits, you’ll also likely receive better MPG, due to the free-flowing design of aftermarket exhausts, compared to the restrictive stock alternative.

infiniti x truhart air suspension esr sr07 machined g35 exhaust

That’s not all, either, because as you’ve probably guessed, all these free-flowing gases will help your VQ35 engine to breathe freely, which will provide both horsepower and torque gains.

With all these benefits, combined with a reasonable price tag, it’s easy to see why this simple, bolt-on upgrade is so popular among owners

If you’re looking for significant power with a turbo or supercharger kit further down the line, an upgraded exhaust is going to be vital.

If this is in your plans, we’d recommend at least a 3” exhaust to ensure that the additional gases can flow to their maximum potential.

Once you’ve found the perfect exhaust, make sure you also upgrade your cold air intake to maximize the breathing potential that these awesome engines have to offer.

Who is this exhaust guide for?

We have written this exhaust guide to help you decide on your G35’s new exhaust system by giving product information, pricing, photos and video clips for twelve of the most popular G35 exhaust systems currently available. We have also included links for where you can purchase each system.

If you’re looking to go all the way with a full exhaust system then make sure you also take a moment to check out our headers, Y-pipes and test pipes guides.

infiniti rwd 2dr coupe w leather 35l 6cyl 5a godspeed project coilovers esr sr11 bronze g35 exhaust

You may think that since they share the same engine, the 350Z and G35 exhausts would be identical, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. If you’re dead set on a 350Z exhaust or perhaps picked up a cheap used one, don’t panic!

There are plenty of extensions on the market. We recommend the 8” version which we’ve generally found to be the perfect fit.

  • Our comment: The Meisterschaft exhaust is undoubtedly the dream of many owners. An absolutely stunning combination of lightweight design and workmanship comes together to offer this perfect offering for those with very, very deep pockets! With various selections available you can create the perfect kit for your needs. With an internal valve to adjust the volume, an electronic valve allows you to go from near-stock sounding to utterly insane. This is an absolutely incredible sounding exhaust and the perfect all-rounder if you’ve won the lotto recently!
  • Manufacturer description: “Meisterschaft GTC (EV Control) exhaust systems are the world’s most technologically advanced units on the market. The GTC exhaust system utilizes electronic valves which control the “open” and “close” functions of the exhaust system. This allows the user to control the sound level, exhaust back pressure, and overall vehicle performance. • Tailpipe configuration: Twin 115mm (4.5″) exits
  • Primary exhaust system material: Titanium
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Manufacturer: Powerhouse Amuse
  • Value for money:🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Our comment: Meisterschaft’s JDM competitor has arrived! While we’re on the subject of insane prices, Japanese tuning legends Powerhouse Amuse bring their R1 titanium exhaust system into the mix. With various customizations, the price varies from $2,950 to $3,500, you can create the perfect exhaust for your needs. As you can probably already imagine, this one again sounds absolutely nuts.
  • Manufacturer description: “Titanium exhaust from Powerhouse Amuse has a main pipe diameter of 76.3mm with a chell parallel silencer layout. This exhaust weights 19.42 lbs and does not have gold rings at the tips.”

  • Internal pipe diameter: 76mm (3″)
  • Tailpipe configuration: Unknown sized exits
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel & Optional Titanium tips
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Manufacturer: AAM
  • Value for money:🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Our comment: The AAM Competition system boasts impressive performance gains and is well suited to those who are going for high power forced induction builds and has proven capable of supporting over 800rwhp! The tone sounds nice and warm and the volume is on the loud side. Possibly not track friendly.
  • Manufacturer description: “The flagship of the AAM 3” exhaust line, the AAM Spec 3” MaxFlow True Dual Exhaust System is the highest flowing exhaust available for the 350Z & G35. Designed to support the most demanding volume and velocity flow requirements, the AAM Spec 3” MaxFlow True Dual exhaust system is a perfect match for any Turbocharged G35 or 350Z, including 800rwhp+ competition setups.”

  • Internal pipe diameter: 76mm (3″)
  • Tailpipe configuration: Unknown sized exit
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Manufacturer: AAM
  • Value for money:🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Our comment: If the dual option above from AAM doesn’t suit the look you’ve got planned for your G35, then maybe their single-exit alternative will be the ideal solution.
  • AAM Competition claims that this is the highest flowing exhaust on the market, and we agree with them that it’ll be the ideal solution for those of you that will be running a forced induction setup on your G.

AAM has intentionally gone out of their way to avoid the boomy highway drone that often comes with the larger exhausts on the market.

This exhaust has been dyno tested, where it provided gains of 10rwhp, and weighs in at just 33 lbs, which is 30 lbs lighter than the stock Infiniti exhaust.

  • Manufacturer description: “The AAM Competition 3″ Single Exhaust is specifically designed for those with extreme volume and velocity requirements. The AAM Competition 3″ Single exhaust is the highest flowing single exhaust available for the 350Z and is a perfect match for Turbocharged street/strip 350Z’s or naturally aspirated/supercharged racing setups that require maximum flow.”

megan racing drift spec single exit g35 exhaust

  • Internal pipe diameter: 70mm (2.5″) or 76mm (3″)
  • Tailpipe configuration: 115mm (4.5″) exhaust tip
  • Primary exhaust system material: Stainless Steel (Burnt Blue Tip)
  • Fitment: Infiniti G35
  • Manufacturer: Megan Racing
  • Value for money:🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • Our comment: Megan Racing often surface in our guides, providing decent quality at an affordable price to the market.
  • If you’re not keen on the look of the exhaust in the photo, then don’t panic, as there’s also an option not to have the burnt tip.

Cheap, large-diameter exhausts are often the loudest, which is the case with this Megan Racing selection, which provides a loud, deep tone.

There is a removable silencer included, should you find it too loud, but remember that this will restrict performance. So, if you’re not in the market for a loud exhaust, this probably isn’t going to be the best choice for you.

However, if you don’t mind rolling loud and proud, and you’re looking to find exhaust with a cheap price tag, this could well present a great opportunity.

  • Manufacturer description: “One of Megan Racing’s strongest products, the Cat-Back System is made of SUS-304 Stainless Steel with a fully polished surface, CNC machined flanges and mandrel bends. Its aggressive styling, and deep, strong tone are just part of the MR Cat-Back characteristics. It also serves to improve horsepower, torque and overall performance with its straight-through design.”

Own a G35 and looking for more power? Check out the forced induction possibilities of these incredible engines in our G35 turbo kit guide.

Which G35 exhaust is our winner?

Japanese tuning house HKS has stood the test of time and continuously delivered an impeccable standard to the market. The quality, sound, and popularity of this exhaust speaks for itself, and combined with its mid-range price point we, therefore, find it our worthy winner.

There is a huge variety of exhausts to suit any needs you may have and we highly recommend ignoring the small horsepower gains between options and going with the exhaust which you like the look and sound of the most.

However, if you think you may go for forced induction further down the line then consider one of the larger diameter options.

hks g35 exhaust

The HKS Hi-Power exhaust has ticked the most boxes for us this time around. Offering an affordable price point combined with a great looking product from an extremely reputable manufacturer.

If money is not an issue, we’d be opting for the Meisterschaft exhaust. Absolutely incredible workmanship combined with the electronic noise control would make it the perfect choice for your daily driver.

Open it up at the track and close it up when parking up or passing the cops, (but we didn’t tell you that!)

View Full Version : Does a G35 have true dual exhaust?

Crash41301

12th October 2005, 09:23

I happened to actually pay attention to the exhaust sound of one last night as I was leaving school in the parking lot. Do these things have true dual's on them from the engine back? If not, what makes them sound so good? (especially for a V6!)

Stealth97

12th October 2005, 09:26

I do not believe it is true duals. A freind has a 350z and it looks like the tips come out of a single muffler.

hobie237

12th October 2005, 09:32

for the price of those cars, they should have true duals! and at the very least it should have a very good sounding exhaust...

you can play with the exhaust note of any car to get it to sound right... accoustical engineers play with ferrari exhaust notes for months if not years before it hits production

Anthony

12th October 2005, 10:06

"true" duals would mean each exhaust tip is emitting the sound of three cylinders. Not pleasant. The early viper had this kind of exhaust set up and it sounded like a sewing machine.

Dual Exhaust systems from a two-head engine must be crossed over at some point to achieve that sound we love -- especially on V8s.

There's nothing wrong with crossing the piping in the muffler like the 350Z and G35 do.

d at the very least it should have a very good sounding exhaust...

Have you listened to a G35 or 350Z at full song?! They sound great!

bripab007

12th October 2005, 10:12

Count me in the club that does not like the sound of Nissan's VQ35 series engines. They sound artificial and canned. No character whatsoever.

13BREMX5

12th October 2005, 10:17

I personally love the sound of those. Would that same muffler sound anything similar on a Miata?

sajack

12th October 2005, 10:20

That VQ is my favorite sounding engine. I find myself lowering my window just to hear them.

Hanzo

12th October 2005, 10:22

The exhaust on the VQ35 sounds so good, it reminds me of Ferraris.

Fritch

Count me in the club that does not like the sound of Nissan's VQ35 series engines. They sound artificial and canned. No character whatsoever.wow and here I thought I was the only one that thought they sounded pretty fake.

Then again I have yet to actually drive one and hear it from the inside....

MRGTX

12th October 2005, 10:35

I go back and forth on the sound.. Its nicely shrill and loud but at the same time it still sounds like a V6- that is to say not as good as a high perf I4, I6 or V8... its hard to put a finger on the specific quality that just isn't as pleasing...

nflack

12th October 2005, 10:36

I think the exhaust sounds lame. Seems especially so on the FX's, which seem much louder also -- perhaps all that extra weight means more throttle and more noise.

1 (small) step above a Civic fart-can imho.

Zardoz

12th October 2005, 10:57

Nissan has done a better job of exhaust work than many other manufactures. My
Titan sounds great for a stock system. Quiet with a nice little idle rumble but open
it up and it turns heads. Nothing like a DOHC 5.6 V8 screaming at 6K RPM's. First
car/truck I have not replaced the exhaust. I like the VQ sound but I can understand
how some people don't like it. Nissan's tend to be loud these days.

I loved the sound of the VQ35 when I owned a G35, but now when I hear them drive past they do sound a bit fake to me. I think it sounds better from the driver's seat.

As for whether it's a "true" dual exhaust, it's not. The stock exhaust is a Y-pipe to a single mid-pipe to a single muffler. There are several true dual aftermarket exhausts out there for them though, and at least the one I heard didn't sound much different (it sounded as different from stock as a Racing Beat sounds different from stock on a Miata), so I'm not sure about the 3 cylinders per pipe theory.

Grimace

12th October 2005, 12:08

I'm in the "don't like the sound" camp too, but I will admit it is ear-catching.

blue1

12th October 2005, 12:09

I also love the sound of the G35's exhaust... I can tell if it's a G' before actually seeing the car itself!

I'm not sure if the noise level would be as appreciated on a daily basis but I enjoy it in passing.

So much time has been spent on the stock Miata "sound" - I don't think it's as interesting as the G's. Perhasps it's time to experiment!!!
:-)

90RedinFL

12th October 2005, 12:15

I think they sound really "forced," as in fake and 'look-at-me' loud and unnatural. I find it boomy and hollow and too loud.

FX's, G35s, Z's, they all end up sounding pretty much the same. Which I also find odd.

Crash41301

12th October 2005, 12:21

I meant an H or X pipe as thats a given on any system, V6, or V8. I've not heard of anyone but ignorant rednecks doing it without one as they motors always make less HP without.

"fake" dual exhaust IMO is the two banks turning into a Y pipe after the headers, then going into a single muffler, and out as two tips. Or perhaps the Y pipe goes to two mufflers. Either way, having a Y pipe dictates "fake" to me.

Stevester

12th October 2005, 12:24

... but I will admit it is ear-catching.

So is scraping a chalk board with your fingernails. :D

Yeah, comparing the Nissan exhaust is just an exageration but I too don't like the sound of the Nissan V-6's, stock or modified. Too "tinny".

bripab007

12th October 2005, 12:58

I'm glad I'm not the only one :) I mean, if you wanna hear how six cylinders should sound from the factory, listen to any BMW...or the NSX...or a 240Z...or a TR6...

13BREMX5

12th October 2005, 13:34

So what do you guys think that muffler would sound like on a Miata? Anything similar, or no?

Tcar

12th October 2005, 14:40

So what do you guys think that muffler would sound like on a Miata? Anything similar, or no?

NO. Miata is I4, those are V6's. Not even close.

Tcar

I meant an H or X pipe as thats a given on any system, V6, or V8. I've not heard of anyone but ignorant rednecks doing it without one as they motors always make less HP without.

That is just not true. It's not a given. Not always less HP either. Ferrari is a redneck?

Crash41301

12th October 2005, 15:51

Ferrari's have no crossover pipe of any kind?

Lejeune123

12th October 2005, 19:11

I personally love the exhaust on the 350Z/G35 and so does anyone else I talk to about it. I wish my car could sound that way. I don't believe it loud or intrusive but any louder and I would. I believe a performance V6 should always sound this way.

hobie237

12th October 2005, 19:21

Ferrari's have no crossover pipe of any kind?

no room for it, especially in the mid-mounted motors...

xsoulbrothax

12th October 2005, 19:25

That is just not true. It's not a given. Not always less HP either. Ferrari is a redneck?

Yeah... agreeing with Tcar here, my friend drives an LS1 and is looking into true duals as his preferred exhaust option right now. The sound is pretty nice, and they're supposedly one step down in power from straight pipes with side exits or dumps or something.

bripab007

12th October 2005, 19:34

The reason the mid-mounted V8 Ferraris differ is that they have flat-plane crank engines. If they put an H-pipe in their exhausts, the car's would sound more like a burbly, cross-plane crank V8.

Dudefish

12th October 2005, 20:00

Authoritative information from a G35 Sedan driver:

1. The G35 exhaust sounds sublime.

2. There is not a true dual exhaust on any G35, Coupe or Sedan. All have a single midpipe which by the way is exhangeable between coupes and sedans, although the sedan has a much larger resonator.

RainMeister

12th October 2005, 20:17

My G35 coupe is a daily driver, and I generally like the sound, especially in tunnels and under-ground garages where I lower both windows to enjoy the resounding baritone effect. What I don't like is the fact that the sound seems to bring out the competitive spirit in others, particularly at stop lights. A completely different but entertaining sound is the high-pitched wail of my S2000 at 8k revs. It absolutely screams Formula One. ;)

SRoss

12th October 2005, 20:18

I must be the exception here. I have a g35c and I don't see the point in having any exhaust sound below ~4000 rpm. It just gets on my nerves when I'm just trying to tool around town. When it's time for spirited driving, then I love to hear that high-revving sound. Mebbe my preference would be for more of Lexus exhaust design in such a luxury car?

Personally I prefer how the NA Miata exhaust sounds for the car that it is, though it be 4-cyl brit-roadster simulation. The Miata actually sounds purry and quietish at low rpm, but toots its sporting 'braaaaap' just when I want it to.

The coupe and sedan mufflers are different. The sedan muffler only cracks open at about 3000 rpm, but every time I'm beside a coupe, the exhaust seems to be "always on." (I don't mean that in a bad way...I love the sound) Maybe you'd like the sedan exhaust better.

EmpiricalGMan

12th October 2005, 21:19

People did always compliment the exhaust sound when I owned the G35. Total strangers would comment on it. I heard "sounds like a Ferrari" at least 4 times. I haven't spent much time listening to Ferraris, so I wouldn't know. I personally grew tired of the sound. Your mileage may vary.

Billy

12th October 2005, 21:38

"true" duals would mean each exhaust tip is emitting the sound of three cylinders. Not pleasant.

Well, the 2nd gen of 300ZXs ('90-'96 US) had true duals. Two cats (4 on a TT), two mufflers, 2 pipes.

They sound pretty sweet to me, expecially a TT with the precats and resonators gutted.

Way different sound that the 350Z/G35 line. Which I agree grows old quick.

hobie237

nikkidanjo

12th October 2005, 22:03

I fall into the g35 isn't that great sounding camp. Then again, to be honest, I've NEVER heard a factory 6 cylinder exhaust that sounded better than the Contour SVT so I am biased. Air cooled Porsches did sound great but that was a total package of noise, not just the exhaust. Even then I thought the Ford sounded better.
The Nissan sounds a bit boy racer to me.

The exhaust sounds completely fake and manufactured. There's a fine line between fibbing the note to sound good, and what Nissan has done. The problem with the sound is it sounds the same throughout the entire rev band. Like when you had a baseball card in your spokes as a kid.

Agreed. Nissan V6s sound downright awful. Like a very depressed bumblebee or something.
