Wyoming is the second-least worried state when it comes to daily concern about crime and safety. The state (and its safest cities) also boasts some of the lowest crime rates in the land.

Nearly 9 in 10 Wyoming residents feel safe in their state, versus just over 5 in 10 nationwide.

Crime rates in Wyoming have remained below national averages for the past three years, with violent crime seeing a slight uptick this year.

Violent crime rose from 2.1 incidents per 1,000 people to 2.2 this year, an increase of 5%. Wyoming saw a 12% drop in property crime this year, moving from 17.9 incidents per 1,000 in 2020 to 15.7.

In the Mountain region, Wyoming is tied with Idaho for the lowest violent crime rate and comes in second (behind Idaho) for the lowest property crime rate. Nationwide, The Cowboy State’s violent crime rate is 41% below the national rate of 3.7 and the property crime rate is 26% lower than the national rate of 21.1.

Level of concern and experience with crime in Wyoming

Wyoming is the least-concerned state when it comes to property crime, gun violence, and the pandemic. Regarding violent crime, Wyoming is the second-least concerned behind Oregon and Vermont (tied) and it’s the fourth-least concerned about package theft.

Decreased reports of personal experiences with crime accompany the state’s lower concern levels. Experience with both violent and property crime dropped four percentage points each year over year.

Experience with gun violence fell from 8% to 2% year over year. With only 14% reporting a package theft in the past 12 months, Wyoming had the second-lowest incidence of package theft, behind Arkansas with 12%.

Crime concerns in Wyoming

We asked Wyoming residents which crimes they worry may happen to them. See if Wyomingites are concerned about the same crime issues as the rest of the country.

Violent crime in Wyoming: Fear vs. reality

There was a small rise in violent crime across The Cowboy State this year, despite reports of personal experience with violent crime falling from 13% to 9% year over year.

  • Violent crime in Wyoming has ping-ponged over the past 3 years—the rate dropped 9% in 2020 but rose this year by 5%.
  • Aggravated assaults are the most common violent crime in Wyoming, making up the same proportion of all violent crimes (68%) as it does nationwide.
  • Robberies are drastically lower in Wyoming, making up just 5% of all violent crimes statewide and only 3% among the safest cities. Nationally, robbery accounts for 22% of all violent crimes.
  • 46% use some form of personal protection like pepper spray—35% more than the national average, despite showing some of the lowest concern overall.
  • 28% say their personal safety has been affected by the pandemic (US 44%). Wyoming worries less about COVID-19 than any other state.

Attitudes about police and gun violence in Wyoming

  • 14% of survey respondents are most worried about a gun violence incident happening to them—63% lower than the national average and the lowest concern of all states.
  • 22% worry about police violence daily—the lowest concern in the country—and 69% have confidence in law enforcement, the third-highest confidence among all states.
  • Wyoming saw 1 mass shooting incident in 2019, and there were none in 2020.
  • There were 4 officer-involved shootings in 2020, the same number as 2019.

Property crime in Wyoming: Fear vs. reality

Property crime has consistently fallen in Wyoming, dropping significantly this year. But despite drops in crime rates and low concern, Wyoming uses more security measures than most other states.

  • The property crime rate dropped 12% this year—from 17.9 incidents per 1,000 to 15.7.
  • Wyoming’s property crime rate is 26% lower than the national average of 21.1.
  • Larceny-theft is the most prevalent property crime, accounting for 77% of all crime statewide.
  • Nationally, larceny-theft accounts for 73% of property crime, and in Wyoming’s safest cities it makes up 83%.
  • Burglaries make up 15% of all property crime in Wyoming, 1 percentage point behind the national proportion. In the safest cities, burglaries make up only 13% of all property crime.
  • 65% of Wyoming residents use some form of property protection (US 62%) with firearms on top at 49%.
  • 13% say the security of their property has been affected by the pandemic (US 29%).

A closer look at the safest cities in Wyoming

For the purposes of this report, the terms “dangerous” and “safest” refer explicitly to crime rates as calculated from FBI crime data—no other characterization of any community is implied or intended.

  • 16 cities met criteria to be considered for ranking.
  • Worland moved up 1 spot this year to claim the title of safest city in Wyoming, despite a rise in violent crime.
  • Torrington showed the biggest improvement year over year, jumping 11 spots to become the second-safest city in the state. Torrington saw big drops in both violent and property crime year over year.
  • Green River fell from the top spot last year to round out the top 3 this year. A spike in violent crime contributed to the shakeup.
  • Lander reported 0 violent crimes, but a high property crime rate kept the city at number 10.
  • There were 2 murders and 6 robberies among all of the safest cities.
  • The average violent crime rate among the safest cities is 1.4 incidents per 1,000—nearly 1 full point below the state’s rate.
  • Gillette reported the most property crimes (626) but had fewer incidents per capita to help it claim the number 9 spot.
  • The average property crime rate among the safest cities is 14.4 incidents per 1,000—more than 1 full point below the statewide rate.
